Installing and removing services

WinGate offers a range of services that you can install on the Services panel, located at Control Panel > Services in the WinGate Management console. Installing a service in WinGate is an easy process, however there are several important things to note.

  • Each service you install must be given a unique name.
  • When you are installing services that listen for, and respond to requests from the network (such as proxy services):

    1. To listen for requests, the service must be configured to use the appropriate network adapter on the WinGate server that clients will make requests to (This referred to as a Binding).

    2. Each network interface can only support listening for one instance of any service port at any time. If the network interface is bound to more then one service, each service must use a unique service port to listen for client requests.

Multiple services

Some services can be installed more then once, and run side by side at the same time if required. This is common amongst network services where you may need to install several instances of service, each for a different purpose.

e.g.

Installing two different WWW Proxy Services to serve two different groups of users. Or configuring one WWW Proxy Service to serve proxy requests, while the other is used to act like a Web server and respond to server requests.

Note

When you are installing more then one instance of a network service to listen for client requests on the same network adapter, then each instance must use a unique service port that users will connect to.

Installing a service

To install a service (when available):

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > Services.
  3. Right click anywhere on the Services panel, and select Install Service. Alternatively, under the Tasks menu, select Install Service. This will open a dialog showing the available list of services that you can install.
  4. Select the required service and click Next.
  5. In the New Service name dialog, give the service a unique name and click Finish. The service will now be listed on the Services panel.

Removing services

WinGate or the component that installed the service, will always determine whether a service can be removed or not. All optional services that you have installed can always be removed.

To remove a service (if permitted by WinGate):

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > Services.
  3. On the Services panel, right click on the service you wish to remove and select Remove. Alternatively, while the service is selected, select Remove from the Tasks menu.

Note

When you remove a service, all of the events it has registered with the WinGate Events system will be removed also. This means that any WinGate event processing systems that have been configured to respond to any of these events will no longer be set.

  • "event management" (with quotes) will find all pages containing the phrase "event management"
  • +event -management will find all pages containing the word "event", AND NOT the word "management"
