Utilities

WinGate offers several utilities to provide extra management options when using the WinGate Management console.

The currently available utilities with WinGate are:

  1. Command shell

The Command shell in WinGate is similar to a telnet server, but is more secure, since all communications are made via the encrypted channel used by the WinGate Management console when it communicates with the WinGate Engine. The Command shell allows users to execute console applications on the WinGate server they have connected to. This is useful for tasks such as:

    • Using ping and tracert to check basic connectivity from the WinGate machine.
    • Running route.exe to view or modify the Operating system route table.
    • Running ipconfig.exe to renew or release adapter addresses, and get TCP/IP configuration information.
    • Using net.exe to browse networks, map drives etc.
    • Running shutdown.exe to reboot the WinGate server, or remote machines.
License restriction: The Command shell feature is only available when using a WinGate Enterprise license.
  2. Packet capturing

WinGate provides the ability for you to capture network packets to and from the WinGate server. Traffic on all network interfaces can be captured or you can perform either basic or freehand filtering to capture particular packets to a pcap format file for further analysis.
