Before you can log into WinGate and configure it, you must choose a user database provider.
The user database provider handles authentication, and user and group management which is the core of all user-based security in WinGate.
If you connect to WinGate and there is no user database provider currently specified for use (e.g. after installation and activation), you will be presented with the Select a User Database provider wizard.
After selecting a provider, you will be prompted to restart WinGate.
WinGate offers 3 user database providers. Depending on your choice of provider, there are different requirements to log into WinGate.
The WinGate user database provides a user database you can use to create users and groups independently of the host operating system or domain.
This can be useful if for whatever reason you don't want the WinGate computer to be on your domain, and don't want to create accounts on the WinGate computer for internet access through WinGate.
The WinGate user database supports large numbers of users, and nested groups. It also supports enabling / disabling group membership so you don't need to delete a user from a group to remove their membership.
The WinGate user database supports several authentication methods, including NTLM, so it is possible to support automatic logon of client browsers if WinGate accounts and passwords match client windows credentials.
When the WinGate user database engine is selected, several accounts and groups are created if they do not already exist. By default, an account called Administrator is created, and this is a member of a group called Administrators. This Administrators group is granted permissions needed to administer WinGate, so you will need to log into WinGate as a member of this group.
Username: Administrator
no password
The Windows Users and Groups Connector allows WinGate to use the user accounts and security groups defined in local users and groups on the computer where WinGate is installed.
Management (creation / deletion / editing etc) of user accounts and security groups is not provided by WinGate, this is still performed in the OS Local users and groups under computer management.
The local Administrators group is granted permissions needed to administer WinGate, so you will need to log into WinGate as a member of this group.
If you are using a home version of Windows (e.g. Windows 7 Home or Windows XP home) do not choose this provider, as Windows does not provide you a user interface to manage local users and groups.
If the WinGate computer is joined to an Active Directory, the Active Directory Connector allows WinGate to use the user accounts and security groups defined in the Active Directory. Like the Windows Users and Groups connector, all user and group administration (creating users and groups, passwords etc.) is performed using the Active Directory Users and Computers mmc.
The Domain Admins group is granted permissions needed to administer WinGate, so you will need to log into WinGate as a member of this group.
In order to use the Active Directory connector, the WinGate computer must be joined to the Active Directory.
If WinGate has been previously configured to use another user database, you can change to another type of user database (if applicable) while you are currently logged into the WinGate Management console.
