VPN Settings

The VPN Settings, located at Control Panel > VPN Settings in the WinGate Management console, allows you to configure the administrational settings for the WinGate VPN installed on this server.

Who am I ?

Name

Here you can enter a name to identify this particular Node when it connects and disconnects from any WinGate VPN. This will show up as the Node entry title on the VPN panel in the Monitoring section of the WinGate Management console.

Description

This is not a mandatory field, however you can enter a description of this Nodes network.

Use these port numbers

Data Port

This is the port that handles data traffic across the VPN. The default is 809 (UDP).

Note

While the Data Port can be changed as required, every Node connected to the VPN must have the same port selected if they are to participate in any exchange of data.

RIPv2

Send local RIP2 updates

This setting means that VPN routes learned from other VPN Nodes, are published via RIP2 on the local network. This means that other machines running RIP listening software will learn the routes to the other Nodes on the VPN, and therefore presumably be able to communicate with them.

The Qbik RIP client was written to enable normal windows workstations to listen for RIP2 broadcasts and benefit from this to automatically configure routing for the VPN, which can otherwise be problematic.

If the WinGate VPN Node machine is not the default gateway for the network, and there is a RIP listener on the multi-homed machine / router that is the default gateway for the network, then we recommend this be turned on thereby enabling the whole network to benefit from learning these routes.

Enable RIP2 Listener

Ticking this option will allow this VPN machine to listen for RIP2 information that is broadcast across the VPN.

This setting is designed to handle the case where there is another RIP sender on the network (e.g. a router broadcasting routes to other subnets, and you want the WinGate machine itself to be able to learn and use these routes).

In this case, the built-in RIP client will ignore broadcasts sent by itself as per Send local RIP2 updates mentioned above.

Publish learned routes on VPN

This option will allow the WinGate VPN machine to publish any routes it discovers over the VPN.

For example, if you have another VPN gateway or another router to other subnets that sends RIP broadcasts on the network, then by enabling this setting the WinGate VPN Node machine can publish these routes to other Nodes in the VPN so they can learn of these other local subnets.

Note

RIP (Routing Information Protocol) and RIP2 are widely used protocols for managing router information within a self-contained network such as a corporate local area network or an interconnected group of LANs.

  • event management (no quotes) will find all pages containing the words "event" OR "management"
  • "event management" (with quotes) will find all pages containing the phrase "event management"
  • +event -management will find all pages containing the word "event", AND NOT the word "management"
