WinGate VPN tunnels
WinGate VPN creates a unique communication tunnel across the Internet for VPN communications which is private only to the VPN.
To maximize security from potential threats such as traffic scanning or eavesdropping on the data that is sent back and forth across the VPN, all data that travels through the tunnel can be encrypted. This is initiated by selecting the Encryption Schema option, located on the Host VPN properties, during the set up of a hosted VPN.
There are two options provided, either having strong encryption or having none at all. Obviously for maximum security the Strong option should be chosen, however there are situations where administrators may choose to not encrypt.
These could be:
Performance
If the VPN is not transmitting any sensitive data. For example, if it is used to set up a network for playing games you might choose to not encrypt each packet for the added performance.
Debugging
If debugging problems with local network traffic, seeing what is transmitted is useful. This should only be used for short durations, as it is unsecured and naked on the wire.
