Notification policy item

The Notifications system registers the Notification policy item with the Policy system as a tool to use when editing policies.

The Notification policy item allows you to have a policy report an incident to the Notifications system to trigger off a selected notification plan. You can place a Notification policy item any where within the policy flow after the event which initiates the policy evaluation. This allows you to dictate the exact condition when the incident will be reported, and subsequently trigger the selected notification plan (as shown in the example of a policy flow chart below).

The Notification item can also be used to acknowledge or close an incident that has previously occurred in WinGate. You can use the Notification policy item positioned in a suitable place in the policy flow chart, to change the status of a selected incident whenever a particular policy is processed.

To use the Notification policy item:

(Please refer to the Policy system help for information on how to use to create and configure a policy).

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > Policy.
  3. On the Policy panel, select the required policy you wish to use the Notification policy item in, or create a new one to open the Policy editor.
  4. In the Items section of the Policy editor toolbox, select a Notification policy item and drag it on the worksheet. This will open the Notification policy item properties.
  5. Choose whether the Notification policy item should:
    • Report incident

When this option is selected the incident will be reported to the Notifications system in WinGate, and trigger the notification plan which you select from the Plan drop down menu. If the incident has previously been reported to the Notifications system then the selected plan will not be reactivated, but will continue as normal. A log entry for this instance of the incident occurring will be made.

    • Acknowledge the incident

If you select this option, the status of the named incident will be set to Acknowledged. When an incident has been acknowledged, the execution of the events in the notification plan associated with the incident will be suspended until either:

      1. The status of the incident is changed to Closed.
      2. The time period set for suspending pending notification events when an incident is acknowledged has elapsed. This suspend option is set in the notification plan associated with the incident, and allows time for someone to resolve the incident (after acknowledging it) and set its status to closed before the remaining notification events in the plan will be executed.
    • Close the incident

Selecting this option will cancel any further processing of the notification plan associated with the given incident name, and reset the schedule of the plan until the incident occurs again.

    Note

If you have chosen the Report incident option, then you need to select from the Plan drop down menu, the Notification plan that the incident should activate.

  6. In the Incident details section enter the name of the incident in the Name field. If this Notification policy item is reporting the incident to the Notifications system then choose a meaningful name to identify the incident. If the Notification policy item is Acknowledging or Closing an incident, then enter the correct name that has been given to the incident previously.
  7. In the Message pane, enter the relevant information that you wish to supply to the Notifications system about the incident. You can use the Insert Symbol button to open the Symbol Browser so you can include any data that may be relevant to the incident at the time that it occurs in the Message pane. This information will be displayed on the Notifications panel when the incident is reported.
  8. Click OK to return to the policy editor worksheet.
  9. Save the changes you have made in the Policy editor.
