Performance counters
The Performance counters module in WinGate allows you to utilize the performance counters available with Windows operating systems, so they can be monitored by WinGate. These can be performance counters from the Windows operating system where WinGate is installed, or you can select the performance counters from a targeted machine on the network. The monitored values provided by these performance counters can be used to manage and control operations throughout WinGate.
Just like monitored WinGate data, the performance counters will provide the most up to date information when required, providing an excellent way to ensure the WinGate server is always running at optimum performance. When monitoring performance counters, WinGate allows you to set upper and lower thresholds that should not be breached. If a selected performance counter reaches a particular threshold, you can utilise the WinGate Notifications system to issue a schedule of notification events, so that administrators can be notified, and WinGate can be configured to respond appropriately.
You could use performance counters and notification events for:
-
Monitoring free disk space. By importing the logical disk free space counter into WinGate, then enabling monitoring on it and setting thresholds, the administrator can set WinGate to send alerts when disk space is getting low. The notification plan could do things like attempt to free up space on the disk. If this was successful in freeing up enough space, the threshold checking could close the incident, and the administrator would be alerted that the situation was under control.
- Monitoring process CPU or memory usage.
- Monitoring of network data from both the WinGate server or a targetted machine on the local network
Utilizing operating performance counters in WinGate involves 2 steps:
-
Publishing selected performance counters into WinGate
You can use the Performance counters panel to select which performance counters will be published in WinGate
-
Monitor the chosen performance counters from the Monitoring tab of the Data panel
Once you have published the performance counters in WinGate, you can have WinGate monitor their values in order to manage and control its operations.
License restriction: Performance counters are only available when using a WinGate Enterprise license.
