The WinGate Internet Client (WGIC) is a small applet that can be installed on client workstations to control how Winsock based applications can make connections to the Internet through WinGate. The WGIC uses a layered service provider DLL to intercept Winsock Application requests and forward them to the Winsock Redirector Service on the WinGate Server for handling using the Winsock Redirection Protocol (WRP). The WRP was developed by Qbik (the authors of WinGate) specifically for this purpose.
The WGIC applet is only available for Windows machines using Windows 2000, XP, or .Net server (2003)
Whenever a Winsock based application such as a web browser or email program makes a request to the Internet on the client machine, the WGIC will intercept the request and forward it on to the Winsock Redirector Service on the WinGate server which will fulfill the request on the clients behalf.
The WGIC applet allows you to define how WRP will handle particular applications on the client machine, by setting these application to use one of three modes:
This tells WRP not to use WinGate for this application.
This tells WRP to let the application accept server requests from the local LAN only, and allow the application to make requests out to the Internet via WinGate.
When a server type Winsock application is placed in this mode, it will not be allowed to make requests out to the Internet, but is allowed to receive Server type requests from the Internet via WinGate. This mode is useful when you have Server type applications on the WGIC client machine (such as a Web or FTP server) that you want to be accessible from the Internet.
Alternatively client applications can be controlled from the Winsock Redirector service on the WinGate server itself.
With an MSI installer, the WGIC can be easily published to client machines in an Active Directory to control the use of client machines.
Check on the Bindings tab of the Winsock Redirector service, that the appropriate network interface is bound to the service so it can listen for WGIC requests from clients on the LAN. The Winsock Redirector service in WinGate will bind any network adapters that have their usage marked as Internal by WinGate automatically, so they can listen for WGIC requests from the LAN (using WRP) automatically after installation.
The Winsock Redirector service will use 2080 for the service port by default. This can be changed in the service properties if required.
Install the WinGate Internet Client applet on the client machine.
By default the WGIC will automatically attempt to control all Winsock applications that attempt to make a connection to the Internet through WinGate. If you want to have Winsock applications not handled by the WGIC, or require handling for server applications, then you will have to configure a WRP mode for that application inside the WGIC applet.
Alternatively client applications can be controlled from the Winsock Redirector service on the WinGate server itself.
Full documentation on configuring and using the WinGate Internet Client is available on the client machine, once it is installed.
