Routing

The ENS driver allows WinGate to act like a router when required. If the WinGate server has multiple network interfaces, each configured and connected to different local subnets, then you can have WinGate route packets between these subnets like a normal router. This feature is turned on by default in the General tab of the Extended Network Driver properties, located at Control Panel > Extended Networking in the WinGate Management console.

To disable WinGate acting like a router:

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > Extended Networking to open the Extended Network Driver properties.
  3. On the General tab deselect the Support for multiple subnetworks (router) check box.
  4. Click OK to apply the changes.

Routing configuration

The Routing tab found in the Extended Network Driver properties, displays the current route table created by WinGate, and various options to control routing through WinGate.

checkbox Relay UDP broadcast packets

This option specifies whether or not you want the WinGate server to route UDP broadcast messages between subnets. If this is disabled then network browsing (of resources) between subnets will not work.

We recommend you have this option turned ON.

checkbox Indicate UDP traffic (Ports < 1024)

The default behavior for the WinGate NAT is to notify the WinGate Engine of any UDP traffic below port 1024 as soon as it occurs. UDP traffic above port 1024 is only shown on the Activity panel (located in the Monitoring section of the WinGate Management console) if it remains active for a longer time frame (20 seconds, with at least 10 seconds since the last activity). On systems that have extensive UDP traffic over NAT (such as a DNS redirect) the volume of traffic could cause an increase in memory usage. This switch allows you to control the display of UDP sessions instigated on port 1024 and lower.

When this option is ticked, all UDP traffic will be shown if it is being intercepted by a Intercepting Proxy that may have been configured on a network service, or if it remains active for a longer time frame.

checkbox Enable support for multiple default routes

Whenever a dialup type connection is made by WinGate, another default gateway is added to the router. This default gateway is assigned a higher priority to the normal one and will cause problems with routing between subnets. This is because packets addressed to the other subnet will be sent to the higher priority default gateway (which is the dialup adapter connected to the Internet).

When this option is enabled, WinGate will intercept any packets addressed to private IP addresses and reroute them to the original default gateway (this way they will reach the destination subnet successfully). Consequently, if this option is disabled, routing between subnets may not work when the gateway computer is online via Dial up networking.

Clicking the Advanced button brings up the Advanced Broadcast Port configuration, which allows you to specify specific ports that can be used for special case UDP broadcasting across the LAN. Certain games and server applications will often need to broadcast UDP packets around the LAN on specific ports.
