Cache volumes

License restriction: Multiple cache volumes are only available when using a WinGate Enterprise license.

Volumes allow the cache to grow beyond the limits of any single disk by using multiple physical disks. This enables storage of a large number of files, thereby improving the usefulness of the cache.

Initial configuration

If there is no cache volume defined (such as at startup) WinGate will create a default volume of 1 Gigabyte in size. This is located in the WinGate\Packages\HTTPCache\Store folder. This allows WinGate to cache data after installation without any further setup.

If your overall cache capacity becomes too small for your needs, any volume can easily be resized.

Alternatively, you can create more volumes on additional hard disks as you require. Volumes are filled in the sequence defined in the cache configuration, which is also the order they appear in the HTTP Cache panel.

To create a volume:

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > HTTP Cache.
  3. On the HTTP Cache panel right click and select Add new volume from the menu. This will open the Add/Edit volume dialog.
  4. Enter a suitable name for the new cache volume. In the Max size field enter the maximum size the cache volume can hold (in megabytes). 1024 megabytes (1 Gigabyte) is the default size.
  5. Click OK to add the Cache volume.

Managing volumes

Each volume (and how full it is) is displayed on the HTTP Cache Panel. All tasks involved in managing a cache volume (such as creating, resizing, and deleting) are available by right-clicking on the appropriate volume and selecting the appropriate task.

The HTTP Cache panel provides control for pausing cache activity on each volume it displays. This is useful when you want to temporarily prevent the current volume from being used by WinGate. When you pause the volume the HTTP Cache will immediately start to use and fill the next available volume.

Volume ordering

WinGate also allows you to specify the order in which the cache volumes will be filled. This is specified on the General tab of the Cache settings dialog.
