Choosing a log

Diagnostic sources

Diagnostic logs can receive information from a range of registered diagnostic logging sources to build the contents of their log file if required. This means that it is possible to have a log create a customized log file, by configuring only the relevant sources to supply their information to that particular log.

By default most diagnostic sources will be set to provide logging information to the diagnostic log called Global. This allows WinGate modules and services that register themselves as a logging source, to be able to start logging to the Global log file after installation.

Diagnostic sources also give you the option to create and use their own log to supply information to. Once you configure a diagnostic source to use its own log, that log will become available for other diagnostic sources to supply information to.

Usage sources

Usage logging sources will each create their own log automatically in order to record their particular usage information to a log file.

Usually they cannot be configured to use another usage log, however there is one exception to this rule. When a second instance of a network service that creates a usage log is installed in WinGate (e.g. a second WWW Proxy server) it will register itself as a distinct source of usage information and create a distinct log in order to build a log file.

In these circumstances, when similar sources are registered, each can be configured to use the same log. This lets you have the same type of proxy servers log their usage information to one log file if required.

License restriction: Usage logs are only available when using a WinGate Professional or WinGate Enterprise license.

Choosing a log for a source:

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > Logging.
  3. On the Sources tab of the Logging panel, click on the Source to open the Source Settings.
  4. From the Log drop down menu, select an available log that the source should use. Alternatively (if it is available) you can select the option to have the source create its own log. This will then become available for other sources to contribute information to.
  5. Click on the Settings button to open the chosen Log settings so you can configure details about the name, format, and location of the log file that is created by the log.
  6. Click OK to apply the changes. The source will now provide logging information to the chosen log, so it can be logged to the relevant log file.

    Note

A source can only supply information to a log of the same type. The availability of which logs a source can supply information to is determined by the type and context to the source, and the type of log that is being selected.
