Log types

A log is the term used by the WinGate Logging system to refer to the configuration that will be used to set the name, location, and formatting details of a log file that it will create. Since its sole purpose is to generate a log file, the terms log and log file are used interchangeably throughout the WinGate Logging system.

The WinGate Logging system can produce two different types of logs (log files):

  1. Diagnostic

Diagnostic log files are the default type of log created for WinGate modules, components, and services when they register themselves as a source of logging information with the Logging system.

By default diagnostic logging sources are set to supply their information to a diagnostic log called Global. They can however be configured to create and supply information to their own diagnostic log, or a different diagnostic log if required. This allows you to create customized log files that contain diagnostic information from a range of different diagnostic sources.

Diagnostic logs are designed to help assist with fault finding, and analyzing a modules operation inside WinGate. You can set the level of information that each source can provide to the log file. Information can include warnings, errors, and debugging information.

Diagnostic logs can be configured to include certain WinGate logging fields in their Log settings. This allows you to control the end format and content of the resulting log file that is created by the log.

  2. Usage

License restriction: Usage logs are only available when using a WinGate Professional or WinGate Enterprise license.

Usage logs are automatically created whenever certain WinGate network services (such as HTTP or SMTP servers) are installed and register themselves as sources of usage information to the Logging system. The registered usage source will automatically create its own usage log to record the traffic and usage data through that WinGate service.

Using a W3C logging compliant format, the sole purpose of usage logs is to record traffic as it travels through each service. Usage logs use a W3C logging compliant format so that each usage log can be read (and analyzed) by third party W3C log analyzers when required.

Similar to diagnostic type logs, the Usage logs allow you to configure the field names and format of the resulting log file that it creates. This lets you customize the log file so it can be read by compatible W3C logging analyzers.

In the case where a second instance of a particular network service is installed in WinGate (e.g. a second WWW Proxy server) it too will register itself as a distinct source of usage information and create a distinct log to build a log file. In these circumstances when similar sources are registered, each can be configured to use the same log if required. This gives you the ability to log usage information from several of the same types of proxy server to the one log file.
