Creating an incident in policy

The Notifications system registers the Notification policy item with the Policy system to assist in creating and defining when incidents can occur during policy evaluation. When configuring a policy in WinGate, you can use the Notification policy item to create an incident that will be reported to the Notifications system. This is done in order to trigger a selected notification plan.

This Notification policy item can be placed at an appropriate place in the policy evaluation flow, allowing you to set the precise conditions in WinGate that will cause the incident to trigger a plan. In the simple example of a policy worksheet (below) a policy has been created based on the occurrence of the WWW Proxy Server:ConnectRequest event. When this event occurs (i.e. a client attempts to make a connection to the WWW Proxy server) the policy will make check to see whether the amount of client connections made in the last minute is under 100.

If it is then the policy path allows the connection processing to continue. If however the value is over 100, then the policy will follow the path to the Notification item which has been configured to report an incident to the Notifications system and execute the appropriate notification plan.

Using the Notification item is perfect for configuring complex conditions that may eventuate into an incident. The evaluations performed by policy will determine if the incident in the Notification policy item will occur.

To create an incident using the Notification policy item:

Please refer to the Policy system help for information on how to use to create and configure a policy.

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > Policy.
  3. On the Policy panel, select a policy (or create a new one) to open the policy editor.
  4. Create the contents of the Policy flow chart. In the example above we have used a policy has been created on the WWW ProxyConnect event. This is connected to a Evaluator expression policy item that checks to see whether the amount of client connections made in the last minute is under 100.

If it is then the policy path allows the connection processing to continue by using an Allow result policy item. If however the value is over 100, then the policy will follow the path to the Notification item which has been configured to report an incident to the Notifications system and execute the appropriate notification plan.

  5. To add the Notification item select a Notification policy item and drag it on the worksheet. This will open the Notification policy item properties.
  6. Select the Report incident radio button, and select which notification plan should be actioned from the Plan: drop down menu.
  7. In the Incident details section, you can configure the name and details of the incident that will be reported. You can use the Insert Symbol button to open up the Symbol Browser, so you can include any available WinGate data in the Message pane. This information will be displayed on the Notifications panel when the incident is reported.
