Creating policies

There are 3 main steps to creating a policy with the WinGate Policy system:

1. Create a new policy by choosing the event(s) that the policy will be based on.

   The first task in creating a policy, is deciding which registered event(s) the policy will be based on. On startup, WinGate modules and components will register all of their events with the Events system. This list of events is made available to the Policy system so that you can choose what event the policy will use.

   When modules and components register their own instance of a certain type of event (e.g. The ClientConnect event is registered by a range of TCP based sources) these are all known as compatible events. The policy system allows you to create a policy that will be processed when one or more of these compatible events take place if required.

   You can create a new policy in two places:

   1. Selecting New Policy from the Tasks menu of the Policy Panel, located at Control Panel > Policy in the WinGate Management console.

      When you create a new policy on the Policy panel, the Policy system will provide you with the Policy Events dialog so you can choose the desired event to base the policy on.

   2. By specifying that the Policy system should process an event on the Events panel, located at Control Panel > Events in the WinGate Management console.

      All events registered with the Events system are listed on the Events panel. From here you can specify which WinGate event processor(s) should handle a particular event whenever it takes place. When you choose the Policy system (an event processor) to process an event, a policy editor will be opened automatically so you can configure the new policy.

2. Construct the policy flow chart

   After creating the policy, the Policy system will open a policy editor so you can configure the flow chart of steps that will be processed by the policy when the event takes place. The policy editor provides a range of evaluation tools and action policy items that you can use to create each step in the flow chart, and a worksheet where you can graphically arrange the structure of the flow chart itself. Each policy item can be configured and connected to each other as required, in order to create the evaluation paths that will be taken whenever the event takes place and the policy is processed.

3. Assign the event to the policy

   Since all policy processing is triggered by the selected event taking place, the Policy system provides an event policy item that is representative of the selected event. For the policy to be processed, the event policy item must be placed on the worksheet and be included as the first item in the flow chart. All the other policy items you have configured on the worksheet, can then be connected in logical sequence from the event item.

   Dragging an event item on to the worksheet of a policy editor is known as assigning the event to the policy. If the event has previously been assigned to another policy (based on the same event) it will be automatically removed from the worksheet of the old policy. Since the flow chart of the old policy is no longer connected to an event item, it will no longer be processed when the event takes place.
