Assigning an event to a policy

The first thing you have to do when creating a policy, is choose the registered event(s) that the policy will be based on. The policy editor will provide the event policy item which is representative of the event(s) that you have selected. You can use the event policy item as a starting point in the policy flow chart. Since all processing of a policy is actioned on the occurrence of an event, the event policy item needs to be placed on the policy editor worksheet, and be the first item in the flow chart. You can then attach other policy items that should be processed when the event occurs to provide the steps and content of policy flow.

Placing the event item on to the worksheet in the policy editor, is known as assigning the event to that policy.

In the example below, the WWW Proxy Server:ProxyRequest has been placed on the policy editor worksheet. The WWW Proxy Server:ProxyRequest event has been assigned to this particular policy.

It should be noted that assigning an event to a policy by simply placing it on the worksheet will not give the policy anything to process whenever the event happens. Other policy items need to be attached in sequence to the event item, for them to be processed when the event takes place. As shown in the example below.

Creating new policy based on a currently assigned event

If you do need to create a new policy based on an event that has already currently been assigned to a policy, then the event policy item will be still be available for selection in the new policy as normal. If however, you place the event item on to the new policy editor worksheet, it will automatically remove that event item from the worksheet of the original policy (Unassigning the policy from the event).

The new policy will now be evaluated whenever the selected event takes place. This has been designed to avoid problems and conflicts that could arise from having different policies (based on the same event) being processed at the same time when the event takes place. The unassigned policies still retain all the flow chart structure that they were configured with (minus the event policy item) and are available to be used by the Call policy policy item in the policy editor.

Note

  • The policy where the event has been currently assigned will be the policy that is processed when the event occurs.

  • An event can only be assigned to one policy at a time. If you assign an event to a policy, that event item will be removed automatically from any policy editor worksheet where it was previously assigned.

  • Policies that are based on the same event, but are unassigned, can still be accessed and utilized by placing a Call policy policy item in the flow chart of the policy where the event is currently assigned.

  • When creating a policy based on compatible events, you can assign more then one of these events to the policy. This allows you to have the single policy be triggered by the occurrence of any one of these events.
