Certificates

WinGate allows you to create digital X509 certificates to secure some of its network operations. The primary purpose of using these certificates in WinGate is to ensure the identity of your WinGate computer to third parties when they connect to it. For example, the WinGate VPN uses a certificate to uniquely identify the VPN Host server to VPN client nodes. Each node can verify this by requiring a certificate fingerprint match before it will connect to the server. This helps to protect client VPN nodes against man-in-the-middle attacks when attempting to join a hosted VPN.

WinGate Mail uses certificates to identify itself to any mail client that makes a secure connection to it.

Certificates panel

You can create as many certificates as you require from the Certificates panel, which is located in the Control Panel of the WinGate Management console. The Certificates panel provides a central place where you can create, view, and edit certificates for use in WinGate.

Using Certificates in WinGate

There are two places in WinGate where you will normally use certificates:

  1. Bindings on WinGate network services that will use TLS or SSL connections, such as the SMTP server for WinGate Mail, and the WWW Proxy server.
  2. The WinGate VPN.
