Using certificates for SSL/TLS communication

License restriction: Certificates are only available for SSL Bindings when using a WinGate Enterprise or WinGate VPN license.

Network services in WinGate use network connections on the WinGate server to listen for, and respond to client requests. Configuring a WinGate network service to use a particular network connection, is known as binding the network interface to the service. As such, each network service has a Bindings configuration where you can set which network connections the service will use. Within this configuration you can specify if the network connection should use SSL for communication to the service using a particular certificate.

Note

WinGate Mail

WinGate Mail utilizes the WinGate SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4 network services in its operation to provide mail services to clients. There are a number of security configurations in the WinGate Mail settings that rely on each of these mail services being configured to support SSL or allow TLS connections. Just like other WinGate network services, these mail network services have a Bindings configuration where they can be configured to use SSL or allow TLS in order to support WinGate Mail.

To have a network service use a certificate for SSL:

(The following instructions for using WinGate certificates are based on the certificate being previously created).

Read more about creating certificates

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > Services and open the properties for the selected service that will use SSL or TLS in its communications.
  3. On the network service properties, select the Bindings tab.
  4. Select Add to add a new dynamic binding policy, or select an existing entry from the Binding Policy pane and click Edit. This will open the Dynamic Binding Policy dialog.
  5. Select the network interface the binding policy will apply to. In this example it is the Local Area Connection with the IP address of 192.168.0.21.
  6. In the Options section, check the Use SSL checkbox, and from the drop down menu select the appropriate certificate that will be used for this service. In this example it was a certificate called SMTP SSL.
  7. Click OK to return to the Bindings tab of the network service properties.

SSL will now be listed in the Options field of the binding policy you have just created in the Binding Policy pane, indicating that the service will accept SSL connections on that network interface.

You can use basic Full-Text Searches against the page title and body to find matching articles. Use the following search modifiers to refine your query:

  • event management (no quotes) will find all pages containing the words "event" OR "management"
  • "event management" (with quotes) will find all pages containing the phrase "event management"
  • +event -management will find all pages containing the word "event", AND NOT the word "management"
