SMTP Delivery service
WinGate Mail uses the SMTP Delivery service to process and deliver mail that has been placed in the email delivery queue. The SMTP Delivery service is capable of processing and delivering mail in the queue to either to a corresponding WinGate mailbox or a remote destination if required.
How it delivers each email in the queue is determined by several factors:
-
Domain rules
The SMTP Delivery service will examine the destination address of each email it is processing in the delivery queue. WinGate allows you to create domain rules which will specify the default delivery action for any email in the queue that may be addressed to the domain in that rule.
This can either be delivery to a corresponding local WinGate mailbox, or to a remote location. Within each domain rule, you can also create address handlers which can be used to tell the SMTP Delivery service how it should deliver an email when it is addressed to a specific address in that domain.
-
Mail settings
You can use the Delivery tab of the Mail Settings, located at Monitoring > Email in the WinGate Management console, to configure general delivery options for the SMTP Delivery service. This covers the Postmasters address, whether WinGate should keep a copy of each sent email, and how long the WinGate will attempt to retry and deliver mail that has been unsuccessful on its first attempt.
You can also set how the SMTP Delivery service will handle the delivery of mail in the email queue, that is to be delivered remotely from this tab. This includes what delivery method it should use, either directly or to via a suitable email gateway (another remote SMTP server).
When remote mail is set to be delivered through a suitable gateway (a remote SMTP server) you can also use the Servers tab of the Mail Settings to define the account and addressing details of the remote email gateway it will use.
SMTP Delivery service properties
The SMTP Delivery service properties can be accessed from the Services panel, located at Control Panel > Services in the WinGate Management console.
The properties provide you with the ability to determine how the SMTP Delivery service will use any network gateways available to the WinGate Server when delivering mail. It also allows you to specify connection and logging options if required.
