Bandwidth Control

License restriction: Bandwidth control is only available with WinGate Professional and WinGate Enterprise licenses

Bandwidth control allows you to limit, or prioritize traffic flows through any WinGate network interface. The ENS driver examines all packets it intercepts and makes a decision on whether the packet is to be delayed, queued, or delivered immediately based on the rule you configure.

Each rule defines what type traffic should be subject to a bandwidth restriction, and which particular bandwidth restriction should be applied to that type of traffic.

Activating Bandwidth control

WinGate bandwidth control is activated by ticking the Enable Bandwidth control checkbox on the General tab of the Extended Network Driver properties.

When you enable this option, access to the Bandwidth Control tab becomes available.

Configuring Bandwidth control

When configuring bandwidth control there are 2 main steps you need to take:

  1. Create a restriction

Using the Restrictions screen in the Bandwidth Control tab, you can define what type of bandwidth control will take place when you create a restriction. Restrictions can throttle bandwidth to either a set value (in kilobits), or a percentage of the available bandwidth.

You can also set a priority level on the restriction which will manage how it is implemented when traffic is also affected by other restrictions.

When creating a traffic rule (see point 2 below) you are required select a restriction that will be put in place when traffic matches the rule.

  2. Create a rule

Using the Rules screen you need to specify what type of traffic will cause the bandwidth control restriction to be implemented. Rules can be configured based on such details as sender/receiver IP addresses, port numbers, protocol types.

When you create a rule you need to set what type of bandwidth restriction will be applied to the type of traffic defined in the rule. You can select from any restrictions you have defined on the Restrictions screen of the Bandwidth Control tab.

  • event management (no quotes) will find all pages containing the words "event" OR "management"
  • "event management" (with quotes) will find all pages containing the phrase "event management"
  • +event -management will find all pages containing the word "event", AND NOT the word "management"
