The Rules screen, found on the Bandwidth Control tab of the Extended Network Driver properties, is where you can create rules for implementing bandwidth restrictions. With each rule you can select what type of traffic will be subject to the rule, and the bandwidth control restriction that should be put in place on this type of traffic.
You need to create the restriction that will be implemented by this rule PRIOR to creating and defining the actual rule. Restrictions can be created on the Restrictions screen of the Bandwidth Control tab.
Click Add to create a new rule. This will bring up the Rule properties.
On the General tab you can select various general options for the rule.
You can configure bandwidth control rules based on what protocol is being used by the traffic (TCP, UDP, GRE, or IP). Other options, such as controlling the maximum TCP window size and including Induced traffic are also available (Induced traffic is secondary traffic in the TCP/UDP connections e.g. FTP Control channels).
This drop down menu allows you to choose a restriction that you have configured on the Restriction screen of the Bandwidth Control tab. Select the restriction that will be applied to traffic that meets the details defined in this rule.
In order to complete defining the rule, a restriction must be selected. This is why you must configure a valid bandwidth control restriction prior to creating a rule of what traffic it should apply to.
Allows you to specify a different restriction that will be used for reverse traffic.
You can define the source and destination IP address to be affected by this rule.
Here you can set the time and duration when the rule will apply, within various time options.
Once you have created a rule, the associated bandwidth control restriction will be applied to all traffic that meets the details defined in the rule. Since traffic may match the criteria of more then one rule, WinGate can manage the order in which the rules would be applied.
The Rules screen has the Allow WinGate to decide order setting to help sort the priority of how the rules will be implemented (This option is checked by default). WinGate will select the appropriate rule to use based on what has been set in the Rule Selection Method option, found on the Scheduling screen of the Bandwidth Control tab. This option defines 5 different selection methods that WinGate can use.
If you deselect the Allow WinGate to decide order option, you must manually arrange how rules will be implemented by using the Up and Down ordering buttons on the Rules screen to order their processing (from top to bottom).
