Policy system - HTTP Cache control

License restriction: The HTTP Cache control policy item is only available when using a WinGate Professional or WinGate Enterprise license.

The HTTP Cache module registers the HTTP Cache control policy item with the WinGate Policy system. Like other policy items, the HTTP Cache control item can be placed in the flow chart of a policy to determine if a request (currently being processed by the policy) will be served from the WinGate cache or not. The HTTP Cache control policy item can also determine whether the response for a request (web page files received from the remote web server) should be added to the HTTP Cache. As such, the HTTP Cache control policy item will be only available for use in policies that have been based around proxy request/response events registered by any HTTP (WWW) Proxy service in WinGate.

In the example below, a policy based on the WWW Proxy Server:ProxyResponse event will check to see if URL returned in the proxy response is on a list of sites that should not be cached. If it is, the policy evaluation will move to the HTTP Cache control policy item labeled Dont cache, which has been configured not to allow the response to be stored in the cache.

The HTTP Cache control policy item allows you determine whether the clients request will be served/stored by the HTTP Cache on a request by request basis. This means that conditions evaluated at the time the request is processed by the policy, will determine whether the HTTP Cache control policy item is hit, and the choice of serving/storing from the cache is made or not.

Using the HTTP Cache control policy item:

(Please refer to the Policy system help for more information on creating a policy)

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > Policy, and open (or create) the policy where the Caching item will be used. This will open the policy editor so you can configure the policy with the HTTP Cache control item.
  3. On the Items section of the policy editor toolbox, select the HTTP Cache control policy item, and drag it on to the policy editor worksheet. This will open the HTTP Cache control settings.

Both Caching options have the same three options. Depending on how you wish to apply the HTTP Cache control policy item in the policy flowchart will determine which options you select.

In the example above this HTTP Cache control policy item will disable the response being stored in the cache for this request if it this HTTP Cache control item is processed.

The Use current setting is set by default for the HTTP Cache control policy item. The Use current setting option is based on what settings have been configured in the Default settings section on the General tab of the HTTP Cache settings.

  4. Click OK to return to the policy editor worksheet. The HTTP Cache control item will now blink allowing you to give it a meaningful name to identify it in the policy flow chart.
