Log Settings

The Log Settings for each log allows you to define how it will format and present information in the resulting log file it creates.

General

The General tab allows you to set the name of the log, the name of the log file that it will produce, and the directory where the log file will be saved.

Naming log files

Each log will generate a new log file according to the roll over schedule that can be configured as a task on the Logging panel. To keep log files to a manageable size this is scheduled to happen once a day for all logs at 12.00 a.m.

When naming the log file you can use symbols that represent various time, date, and name variables in the file name to make it more dynamic and relevant to the moment the actual log file is created. To insert a symbol in the log file name, simply place the cursor at the point in the Log Filename field where you want the symbol to be inserted and click the Option button to select from a range of available variables.

The Expanded field below the Log Filename field will show how the log file name will appear based on the current values of the symbols you have included.

Format

The Format tab of the Log Settings allows you to choose the fields that will be included in each log file entry. These are dependent on what type of log file the log will produce. This will either be:

  1. Diagnostic format

  2. Usage format

Sources

The Sources tab displays all the registered logging sources that have been configured to provide logging information to the log.
