Viewing log files

The Logging system in WinGate provides a Log File Detail pane to examine the current and archived log files.

Located on the Logging panel, the Log File Detail pane offers line by line examination of each log file that has been created by a particular log. The field format of the log file will be displayed according to the detail and order of logging fields set on the Format tab of the Log Settings for that particular log.

Log Record Detail

When you select a line in a log file while it is being displayed in the Log File Detail pane, that line will be displayed in the Log Record Detail viewer.

Using the direction buttons, the viewer allows you traverse backwards and forwards through the log file on a line by line basis for easy examination of each entry.

When using the Log Record Detail for examining usage type logs, the viewer allows you to view the value in particular field of each line of the log file. As such, when using the Log Record Detail usage log viewer, the dialog is slightly different to the Log Record Detail viewer provided for diagnostic logs.

License restriction: Usage logs are only available when using a WinGate Professional or WinGate Enterprise license.

Searching

When you are viewing a log file in the Log File Detail pane on the Logging panel, you can search for particular instances of information found throughout the log file. Simply right click in the Log File Detail pane and select Search from the menu to open the Search dialog.

The Search dialog allows you to search through the entire log file or a selected column as required. You can use the standard *(asterisk) and ?(question mark) WinGate wildcards to provide a pattern match to what you are looking for.

Exporting information

All logs produce tab delimited format log files. As such, they can be opened from their saved location by any appropriate application that can read tab delimited log files.

From the Log File Detail pane, you can select which lines of the log file you require and copy them to the clipboard for pasting if required. You can select all lines or just the relevant line entries as you need. For ease of administration, individual cells of information from the log file can also be copied from this menu.

Usage logs

Usage logs produce W3C compliant log files so they can be viewed in W3C logging analyzers. You can adjust and create fields for each usage log file depending on the conformity requirements of the W3C Log analyzer you are going to view the log file with. The field format can be set on Format tab of the Log Settings for the usage log you are configuring.
