POP3 Proxy Service

The POP3 Proxy Service provides POP3 collection services for client email applications who are attempting to collect mail from a remote POP3 Server on the Internet via a proxy.

Setting

Default value

Service Port

8110

This service port is not the standard 110 (TCP) usually associated with POP3, but it has been chosen so it will not conflict with the POP3 Server (if it has installed) which listens on port 110 by default.

Bindings

The POP3 Proxy service will automatically bind to any network interfaces that have their usage marked as Internal by WinGate.

Registered events

ClientConnect, ClientDisconnect

Note

In situations where the WinGate POP3 Server is not installed, then you can change the default service port of 8110 (TCP) for the POP3 Proxy Service to the standard 110 (TCP) for POP3, so that clients don't have to change their default email application proxy server settings.

Configuring clients to use the POP3 Proxy service

  1. Proxy clients

    Note

    Configuring proxy clients

The following configuration applies ONLY to clients who want their email application to make proxy requests to the POP3 Proxy in WinGate. When clients are using any other client connection method through WinGate (NAT or WGIC) then they can configure their email applications as normal, specifying a normal account username and mail server settings. If you want these NAT and WGIC clients to also have their POP3 requests controlled by the POP3 Proxy, then you can utilize the Intercepting proxy feature to intercept their POP3 requests (See NAT and WGIC clients section below).

    Delimiter

When clients wish to use configure their email applications to make proxy requests to the POP3 Proxy in WinGate, they must use delimiter character in the POP3 Account name /username setting in the configuration of their email application.

On the General tab of the POP3 Proxy server properties, you can specify in the Settings section what type of delimiter should be used. The default is usually the # (hash) symbol.

    1. On the clients computer open the account settings in their chosen email application.
    2. In the POP3 Account name / Username field, enter the POP3 user name plus the delimiter symbol, followed by the POP3Server where they will retrieve the mail from. For example if the account name is John, and he is collecting mail from the mail server pop3.example.com, then the following should be entered in the Account name/ username field:

      John#pop3.example.com

      Note

When configuring your client email application this way, the default return address will be in the format username#pop3server@wingate. In the example John#pop3.example.com@wingate will be used as the default return address unless you specify a correct one.

Make sure that your return address is your actual email address.

    3. In the POP3 server field of the clients email application configuration, enter the LAN IP address of the WinGate server. Set the connection port in the POP3 Server field to port 8110 in order to make a connection to the POP3 Proxy in WinGate.

      Note

If the WinGate POP3 server is not installed, you can bypass this step by configuring Service port setting of the General tab of the POP3 Proxy Service to port 110 (TCP). This way proxy clients can connect to the service on the default POP3 port of 110 (TCP).

  2. NAT and WGIC Clients

To allow NAT and WGIC Clients to benefit from the features offered by the POP3 Proxy, you can have the POP3 Proxy intercept all client connections (regardless of what type of method they are using) that are made to it on particular ports. You can configure which ports will be intercepted in the Intercepting tab of the POP3 Proxy.

    1. Open the WinGate Management console.
    2. Navigate to Control Panel > Services.
    3. On the Services panel, open the properties of the POP3 Proxy service.
    4. Select the Intercepting tab.
    5. In the Intercepting proxy section, tick the Intercept connections... checkbox.
    6. Click the Add button to add the port number(s) that NAT and WGIC clients connect to the POP3 Proxy service on, and you wish to have intercepted.
    7. Click OK to accept changes.
    8. Reopen the Intercepting tab to see that the port intercept is listed and reading as Started.
