DNS Service

WinGate provides an optional DNS service for clients when they don't have access to a DNS server capable of performing DNS name lookups on the Internet. Clients can specify the LAN IP address of the WinGate server for their DNS, and all name lookups will be performed automatically when the client attempts to access the Internet.

Note

  • WinGate clients that have their applications configured to make proxy requests to WinGate do not require the WinGate DNS service. This is because DNS lookups are automatically performed by WinGate as a standard part of handling the proxy request.

  • Clients who have been configured to use either of the other two client connection methods through WinGate (NAT or WGIC) will require some form of DNS name lookup service. This can be either a DNS server capable of performing Internet name lookups on the LAN, or by configuring them to use the WinGate DNS service.

  • If there is a DNS server on the same LAN as the WinGate clients that can perform Internet DNS lookups, then this can be used rather then installing the WinGate DNS service.
  • If WinGate is installed on the SAME computer as the DNS server capable of performing Internet DNS lookups (i.e. connected to the Internet), then there is NO requirement for the WinGate DNS service to be installed.

Active Directory

In Active Directory environments it is mandatory for Active Directory computers to use a DNS server responsible for the domain the Active Directory is in. In certain Active Directory environments the Active Directory DNS server is only responsible for name resolution within the Active Directory and so cannot resolve Internet DNS requests. In this case you can use the DNS service in WinGate as a potential Forwarder that the Active Directory DNS server will refer to when clients require a name lookup from the Internet.

Alternatively if the Active Directory DNS is capable of performing Internet DNS resolution, then there is NO reason to install the WinGate DNS service for WinGate clients.

DNS Service properties

Like other network services the DNS Service properties can be accessed from the Services Panel, located at Control Panel > Services in the WinGate Management console, once it is installed.

Setting

The service port for DNS cannot be changed

Bindings

The DNS service will automatically bind to any network interfaces that have their usage marked as Internal by WinGate.

Request

To enhance its ability to perform lookups, WinGate provides the DNS Client configuration which allows you to set which upstream DNS servers (and their preferred use) the WinGate DNS service should use to resolve DNS lookups.

  • event management (no quotes) will find all pages containing the words "event" OR "management"
  • "event management" (with quotes) will find all pages containing the phrase "event management"
  • +event -management will find all pages containing the word "event", AND NOT the word "management"
