Accessing a WinGate mailbox
Users can use either the POP3 protocol, or IMAP4 protocol to connect and access/retrieve their mail from a WinGate mailbox. Accordingly, the appropriate WinGate mailbox network services must be installed and present to listen for users access requests.
All mail network services are optional and so are not installed by default.
The mailbox network services are:
-
IMAP4 Server
Since all WinGate mailboxes are created in an IMAP format, you need to install the IMAP4 Server for mail clients who wish to connect to their WinGate mailbox using the IMAP4 protocol.
-
POP3 Server
When users attempt to access their local mailbox on the WinGate server with POP3 client software, using the POP3 protocol, they need to connect to the POP3 Server in order to retrieve their mail.
Note
In previous versions of WinGate, the type of mailbox a user had was determined in their user properties within WinGate. In WinGate, all mailboxes use an IMAP4 format. Users who wish to use POP3 client software to retrieve their email from WinGate can do so, but they will only have access to the Inbox folder of their WinGate mailbox.
