SOCKS settings

The SOCKS Service has several unique settings that can be configured on the General tab.

Require authentication

This option will force all SOCKS clients to authenticate themselves when they make requests through the SOCKS server.

Enable interception

Usually most SOCKS client applications will be controlled and forced to connect to the service port in use by the SOCKS server on WinGate (regardless of what port the client application attempts to connect to). When a SOCKS client makes a request on any application port that is being intercepted by the Intercepting proxy configuration of another WinGate network service, setting this option to true will allow that connection to be intercepted and subjected to the controls and features of that service.

Reverse lookups

Selecting this option will cause WinGate to convert IP numbers used in requests to Domain names. This option improves cache usage as if that name exists in the cache then it can be used directly rather than reloaded.

Allow SOCKS4 clients

This enables support for clients using SOCKS 4 version software.

Note

The Allow SOCKS4 clients option is set to true by default in order to support SOCKS4 clients, however since SOCKS 4 does not support authentication, enabling the Require authentication SOCKS setting will cause SOCKS 4 clients to fail authentication. As such the Require authentication option is set to false (disabled) by default.
