Dashboard indicators

Dashboard indictators serve two purposes:

  1. Indicators can be placed on a dashboard to display the status of a control point that has been registered by a WinGate module with the Data system. Dashboard switches can be created around these control points in order to control component activity.
  2. Indicators can be used to show whether the value of a piece of monitored data, currently lies within a range of values. Each range can be indicated with a different color, or an appropriate text label as required.

There are two different types of indicator that you can create:

  1. Control Point indicators

Control point indicators can be used to show the status of a registered control point. This useful when you need a visual display of the status of a switch that has been created on another dashboard, without having to open that particular dashboard. This may be a colored light, or a text label indicating its current position.

Alternatively, control point indicators can be used to display the current value of a global data Boolean value, regardless of whether there has been a switch created for them on a dashboard. Since the state of global data Boolean values can be changed by other WinGate modules and components, you can create an indicator that will show the current state of the Boolean value. (i.e. one color or text label indicating a true (on) state, and one color or text label to indicate a false (off) state).

To create a control point indicator:

    1. Open the WinGate Management console.
    2. Navigate to Monitoring > Dashboard.
    3. Right click on the dashboard where you want to place an indicator, and select Design from the menu. Alternatively you can select Design from the Tasks menu on the Navigation panel. This will put the dashboard into Design mode.
    4. On the Design tool bar select an Indicator and drag it on to the dashboard. The new indicator will appear in yellow attached to the mouse pointer, allowing you to position it on the dashboard. Once positioned, left click the mouse to secure the indicator position and open Indicator settings.
    5. In the Source Type field, select the Control Point (Switch) option.
    6. Click the Input button next to the Control source entry. This will open up the Select Control Data dialog.
    7. Select the registered control point you want the indicator to display the status of, and click OK to return to the Indicator properties.
    8. In the Style section, select the Indicator style to choose what type of indicator you want. This can be either a round or square light, or a text label, that will change according to the state of the control point, or global Boolean value.
    9. In the Indicator settings section, click the Input button next to the Thresholds entry. This will open the Thresholds dialog.
    10. Select a color that will indicate an Off state, and a color to indicate an On state. If you have chosen a text label as the indicator in Step 8, then you can change the text that will be displayed by editing the appropriate Name field.
    11. Click OK to return to the Indicator properties.
    12. Click OK to return to the dashboard where the Indicator will be selected. You can create a suitable label for the Indicator to identify its purpose on the dashboard if required.
    13. Select Close from the Dashboard toolbar to exit Design mode.
  2. Monitored data indicators

You can also create an indicator to display a certain color, or appropriate text label, when the value of a piece monitored data is currently within a set range of values. When configuring the indicator, you are able to define the scope of each range of values and the appropriate indicator color or label that they will display.

    1. Open the WinGate Management console.
    2. Navigate to Monitoring > Dashboard.
    3. Right click on the dashboard where you want to create an indicator, and select Design (Ctrl-D) from the menu to put the dashboard into Design mode. Alternatively you can select Design(Ctrl-D) from the Tasks menu on the Navigation panel.
    4. On the Dashboard tool bar that appears when Design mode is enabled, select the Indicator. The new indicator will appear in yellow attached to the mouse pointer, allowing you to position it on the dashboard. Once positioned, left click the mouse to secure the indicator position and open the Indicator settings.
    5. In the Source Type field, select the Data Value option.
    6. In the Control Source field, select the Input button to open the Select data dialog.

      Note

Remember that you need to set a piece of published data to be monitored by WinGate, before it will appear as an available piece of monitored data.

    7. In the Value field, select the value that the indicator will check. This is either the current value (default) or a rate setting from the drop down menu.
    8. In the Style section, select the Indicator style to choose what type of indicator you want. This can be either a round or square light, or a text label, that will change according to the range of values in which the monitored data is currently sitting.
    9. In the Indicator settings section, click the Input button next to the Thresholds entry. This will open the Thresholds dialog.
    10. Configure the color and name for each different range of values that can be displayed. You can create as many ranges as you require. If you have chosen a text label as the indicator in Step 8, then you can change the text that will be displayed by editing the appropriate Name field.
    11. Click OK to return to the Indicator properties.
    12. Click OK to return to the dashboard where the Indicator will be selected. Create a suitable label for the Indicator to identify its purpose on the dashboard.
    13. Select Close from the Dashboard toolbar to exit Design mode.

You can use basic Full-Text Searches against the page title and body to find matching articles. Use the following search modifiers to refine your query:

  • event management (no quotes) will find all pages containing the words "event" OR "management"
  • "event management" (with quotes) will find all pages containing the phrase "event management"
  • +event -management will find all pages containing the word "event", AND NOT the word "management"
