The Mail Settings Receiving tab is used to configure how the SMTP Server will receive email from sources outside of WinGate (e.g. local and remote users) for placement in the email delivery queue.
Receive mail while ... MB free on partition
You must have this checked in order to receive mail through WinGate. The number you enter here is the low watermark for WinGate i.e. when this figure is reached, WinGate will stop receiving mail, and only deliver.
Allow relay
Select this if you wish WinGate to accept and send email for domains that are not local. Not checked by default.
The Allow relay option is a potential security risk and is not recommended.
If you want particular email from untrusted senders to be received by WinGate and placed in the email delivery queue for delivery by the SMTP Delivery service, then you should create a specific domain rule for it on the Domains tab, instead of enabling this option.
Max message size (KB)
This option will set a maximum size limit on all mail received by the SMTP server.
Max number of recipients
Check this box and fill in the field to set limits on how many mail recipients can be delivered to at any one time.
Disconnect if sender sends... disallowed commands
This limits the number of commands the server will tolerate before the connection will be terminated. Lower this limit if you have a slower Internet connection.
Block invalid sender domain
Check this box to examine the validity of mail from incoming IP addresses. When turned on, this option ensures that the domain is valid against DNS records and/or a mail exchange (MX) record. It also checks that the IP addresses and server names are not obviously bogus (e.g. 127.0.0.1 - or any other loopback addresses - are invalid).
Block blank return-path
Check this box if you don't want to receive emails that don't have a valid return path i.e. checking this is a good way of reducing spam.
Block numeric sender domains
Check this box if you don't want to receive emails that contain IPs in the address field. This is a common spamming technique.
Use Open Relay Detection
Check this box to enter the domain name or IP of a server if you want this server to check the sender's IP against known open relay server lists. You do this in the subsequent Open Relay Database Settings dialog.
Block attachment file types
You may wish to ban attachment file types that are a potential virus risk to your network e.g. .exe, .vbs, .pif, .com, .scr. Enter these attachment types into the subsequent Banned Attachments screen.
Allow relay
This option is checked by default to allow users on the same LAN as WinGate, to send mail outbound through WinGate without needing to configure a domain rule on the Domains tab. It should be noted that if this setting is unchecked, it will stop the receiving of mail by WinGate Mail for delivery, unless it is addressed to a domain that has a rule configured for it on the Domains tab.
