Winsock Redirector Service - Handling WGIC server applications
The Winsock Redirector Service in WinGate can be set to listen on behalf of server applications (such as a Web or FTP server) that maybe running on a machine that has the WinGate Internet Client installed.
To configure a server application to use Global Access mode on a WGIC machine (in order to receive requests from the Internet through the Winsock Redirector Service in WinGate):
-
Configure the Firewall on the WinGate server:
- Open WinGate Management console.
- Navigate to Control Panel > Extended Networking Services.
- Open the ENS Port security configuration.
- On the Port Security screen select the Connections from the Internet drop down menu option and choose the appropriate protocol (TCP or UDP) used by the clients to communicate with the server.
- Click the Add button. This will bring up the Port Range Configuration dialog.
- Select the type of connection that will be affected by the security filter. (Connections from the Internet and the appropriate protocol will already be ticked after completing Step 4).
- Specify the appropriate port (port range) that is influenced with this filter, and a description that will easily identify its purpose. This port will be the same as what the server application is listening for incoming connections on (e.g. FTP servers are usually configured to 21(TCP) and Web servers to port 80 (TCP)).
- In the Action section (when a packet uses this port) select Allow Packet radio button.
- Click OK to save changes and exit.
-
Configure the WGIC machine:
- Open the WGIC applet.
- Select the User Application tab.
- Click the Add button to locate and select the executable of the Server application. This will open the Application Scope dialog.
- Press the Browse button to locate and select the executable for the desired server application.
- Select Global access radio button.
- Click OK to save and exit.
Note
An alternative to setting the server executable to Global mode on the machine running the WGIC (and the server application) is to create a policy to control the application event every time it occurs in the Winsock Redirector service. You can use the Application control policy item provided by the Policy system to set whether the particular application is allowed to receive Server requests.
In this case configuration of the executable on the WGIC is not required.
