DHCP Modes

For easy administration, the WinGate DHCP Service can be set to run in three different modes of operation. Each mode determines how much information and configuration the DHCP Service needs in order to provide DHCP services to the client. You can select which mode you want the DHCP Service to operate in on the DHCP Mode tab in the DHCP Service properties.

  1. Fully automatic (default)

When the DHCP service is first installed and started, it will examine available network interfaces for any IP address details that have been configured. If it finds that it has an interface with private IP address details, it will create a scope (pool) of IP addresses based on the address range of these details.

Since the default operating mode of the WinGate DHCP Service is Fully automatic, WinGate will use it's own private IP address as the DNS and Gateway setting to be issued to DHCP clients. This helps to ease the process of providing WinGate clients with the correct IP address details so they can access the Internet through WinGate.

  2. Semi automatic

In Semi automatic mode, you can select which DHCP details WinGate will automatically set (based on its LAN interface as mentioned above) and what details you will need to configure in the DHCP service.

  3. Manual

In Manual mode, you will need to configure all required options to be used in the DHCP Service (scopes, scope options etc.)

Note

Even in Fully automatic mode, you are still able to manually configure any scopes and extra options. The mode simply refers to what WinGate will do automatically to help you. So if you have specific requirements, it can be useful to start out using Fully automatic mode, then make your own modifications later on.
