DHCP Reservations

The WinGate DHCP Service allows you to reserve an IP address for a specific client from the address scope, based on either their computer name, or the Physical address (MAC) of their network card.

Note

  • You can change any information about a reserved client at any time.
  • Reserving an address does not automatically force a client who is currently using the address to move elsewhere. If you are reserving a new address for a client, or an address that is different from the client's current one, you should verify that the DHCP Service has not already leased the address. If the address is already in use, the client that is using it must release the address by issuing a release request.

Adding Client reservations

In WinGate DHCP you can set IP address reservations based on the name of the client computer, or by the Physical (MAC) address of it's network interface.

To add a reservation for a client computer:

  1. Select the DHCP Settings tab.
  2. Right click the Scope where you wish to add the reservation.
  3. Select New reservation to open the Reservation dialog.
  4. In the IP Address field, enter the desired IP Address from the scope range that you wish to have reserved. You can specify any unused IP address in the scope.
  5. In the Reserve by section, select either the Computer name / Physical Address / DHCP relay info(option 82) radio button, depending how the client should be identified for the reservation.
  6. In the Data field, enter the appropriate details (the client computer name or the Physical (MAC) address of the clients network card etc.) depending on the reservation identifier selected above.
  7. Click OK to add the reservation.
