DHCP Scopes

The WinGate DHCP Service allows you to create a range (or multiple ranges) of IP addresses that can be issued to DHCP clients. Each pool of IP addresses is referred to as a scope. This allows you to configure separate scopes for different requirements. This is useful when you have different subnets that require different ranges of IP addresses to be allocated.

You can set additional addressing options on each scope, or Global options that will be applied across all of the DHCP scopes you have created. These options include the Gateway and DNS server settings that will be given to the client when they make a DHCP lease request.

Note

In Fully automatic mode WinGate will examine all network interfaces on the WinGate server. If an interface has been configured with private IP address details, then the DHCP Service will create a scope based on each private IP address found. This allows the DHCP Service to lease IP addresses to network DHCP clients automatically on startup if required.

To add a new scope:

  1. Open the WinGate Management console.
  2. Navigate to Control Panel > Services and open the DHCP service properties.
  3. Select the DHCP Settings tab.
  4. Right-click the interface on which you wish to add a scope. Choose New scope to bring up the Scope Properties configuration.

    General

In the Description field, enter a unique name for this scope. This will be displayed in the DHCP options window.

    Scope enabled

    Enables/disables allocation from this scope.

Allocate IP addresses in the range

Enter a suitable range that is the same as the IP address that has been assigned statically to the network card. This is the range of IP addresses to allocate to clients.

    Lease duration

The default lease time for an address is 60 days. This is a suitable time for most LANs. If you have a LAN with more computers than the size of your scope, you may wish to set a shorter lease period. This will enable the available IP addresses to be shared around.

    Excluded addresses

These are IP addresses within the scope range that you do not wish to allocate to client computers. Excluded addresses are useful for servers who require a static IP address in the same range as the DHCP clients on the LAN.

    Options

Click the Options button to bring up the DHCP options dialog where you can set different options such as the Gateway and DNS server settings DHCP clients will use.

    Note

    Global options

Options can be set on specific scope you are configuring or they can be set globally to be applied across all scopes. To set Global options (that will be applied across all scopes) :

    1. On the DHCP Settings tab click on the Global options.
    2. On the Global options dialog, choose the appropriate options you wish to apply to ALL scopes that the DHCP Service has configured.

Alternatively you can add more options to this list from the DHCP Definitions configuration on the DHCP panel, located at Monitoring > DHCP in the WinGate Management console.

License restriction: DHCP Definitions are only available when using a WinGate Enterprise license.

Changing scope properties

You can change the properties of an existing scope by simply clicking on the desired scope in the DHCP Settings tab to bring up the Scope properties. You can extend the address range of the scope, but you should be careful when reducing it since IP addresses outside the new range could already be leased.

Removing a scope

When a subnet is no longer in use or if you want to remove an existing scope, you can remove it from the DHCP service. It is recommended that you deactivate a scope until you know that no leases are current before deleting it.

To remove a scope:

(The scope should be deactivated until you are sure the scope is not in use.)

  1. On the scope list in the DHCP Settings tab, select the scope you want to remove.
  2. Right click on the scope and select Delete from the scope menu.
