Gateways

The Gateways tab found in the properties of certain network services, allows you to configure which gateway that network service should use.

WinGate will examine the gateway settings for each network interface it has. To manage the availability and use of each of these gateways, you can create a Gateway policy by clicking the Add button. This will open the Gateway Policy dialog.

In the Gateway Policy dialog are listed all of the gateways that have been set on the network interfaces that WinGate has available. You can select a specific gateway from a listed adapter, or you can simply choose that the policy cover any gateway configured on that adapter.

The Source IP Address option allows you select what source IP address will be set in all packets that are sent to the chosen gateway. This can be any IP address that is used by an interface in the operating system on the WinGate server.

Once created, each gateway policy will appear as list entry on the Gateways tab.

Gateway selection

By default, WinGate will automatically use the gateway address that has been set on any network interface which WinGate has classified as External(Internet connection) and is deemed to be available. There are however three different options available in the Connection Scheme drop down menu on the Gateways tab:

  1. Use any available connection

This is the default option. WinGate will automatically use the gateway address that has been set on any network interface which WinGate has classified as External (Internet connection) and is deemed to be available.

  2. Use all specified connections in rotation

You can create a gateway policy based on one or more of the gateways that have been discovered by WinGate.

Selecting the Use all specified connections in rotation option will cause WinGate to use each listed gateway policy in rotation.

  3. Use specified connections in priority order (failover)

This setting will prioritize the listed gateway policies which the service will use. This setting allows for some redundancy, so that if a gateway in a particular policy becomes unavailable, the service will use the next gateway (policy) listed. Using the Up and Down buttons, the listed gateway policies can be ordered for priority of use.

Note

Monitor for dead gateways

The Monitor for dead gateways option found in the Extended Network Settings of WinGate Management console, plays an important role in the functionality of Gateway selection.

If the WinGate finds that a gateway is dead, it will show up accordingly in the Gateways tab for each network service as dead, and so be unavailable for selection.

If a gateway is found dead it will also prevent the interface from be used as an External interface (Internet connection) for a WinGate service, since it has no way of servicing the client request upstream.

When the Monitor for dead gateways option in the Extended Network Settings is not selected, then all interfaces that have a gateway set in their network properties are deemed to be available to be used by WinGate.
