Connection control

License restriction: The Connection control policy item is only available when using a WinGate Enterprise license.

The Connection control policy item allows you to specify whether WiinGate should make this particular connection through an upstream proxy server, as part of policy processing.

The Connection control action item will only be available in the policy editor, when you are configuring a policy that is based on the occurrence of a session based event (e.g. The ClientConnect event registered by the WWW Proxy service creates an HTTP session).

Normally the way that a WinGate proxy service makes a connection to a remote server is defined in the properties of the actual service. This setting usually applies to all sessions handled by the service.

The Connection control policy item can be used when you wish to specify how the proxy service will make the connection for the particular session that is created when the policy event occurs. This is useful when you want the policy to evaluate the conditions of the event, in order to determine how the connection will be made.

e.g.

A client makes an Internet request using the WWW Proxy service, which in turn generates an HTTP session. A policy based on this event could check to see that if the client making the request belongs to a certain group, then the WWW Proxy service will make the connection to the remote Web server through via an upstream proxy server. If the client isn't a member of the group, then the WWW Proxy service will make the connection directly.

To use the Connection control item:

  1. Open the policy editor.
  2. On the Items tab, select the Connection control item and drag it on to the worksheet. This will open the Connection control properties.
  3. Check the Connect via upstream proxy option, and enter the IP address of the proxy server and port in the respective Server and Port fields.
  4. In the Proxy type drop down menu, select what type of proxy the connection will be made to :
    • Normal proxy

    • SOCKS4

    • HTTP Proxy using CONNECT

  5. Select the Proxy requires authentication option (if required) and enter the appropiate user credentials in the Username and Password fields.
  6. Click OK to return to the worksheet. The Connection control item will now blink allowing you to give it a meaningful name so you can identify it easily in the policy flow chart.
