Run process

The Run process policy item allows you run a selected program executable when required within a policy evaluation. It can be instigated through the outcome of a particular decision type item, or as simply as the result of the event occurring that will trigger the policy to action the Run process policy item.

The Run process policy item provides great administrative power to any policy. When combined with the various decision type policy items, it allows you to execute any executable when conditions during the policy evaluation match certain criteria. This could be useful when conditions during policy evaluation require a monitoring or control program to be run.

To use the Run process action item:

  1. Open the policy editor.
  2. On the Items tab, select the Run process policy item and drag it on to the worksheet. This will open the Run process properties.
  3. In the Commandline field, enter any required switch for the executable when it is run. You can insert event data values at required positions by clicking the Insert symbol button to the right of the Commandline field and selecting the required event data parameter that you wish to use from the Symbol Browser.
  4. In the Start folder field, enter the full path to the executable that you wish to run when this policy item is processed in the policy evaluation flow.
  5. In the Options section, check which options you require to control how the process will execute. The Wait for process to terminate, and Kill process if wait times out options are selected by default to ensure that when the process is finished running it will terminate gracefully and not hang. Hence there is a 2 minute wait after the process has indicated that it will terminate, before WinGate will forcibly kill the process. This time-out can be adjusted as required.
  6. In the Advanced section, select the Run process as user checkbox if you want the process to run under a particular user account. Click the input button to the right of this option, to open the Search for Users and groups dialog so you can select the appropriate user account the process will be run under. This will also require you to enter the appropriate user password in the Password field.
  7. Click OK to apply the changes to the Run process item and return to the policy editor worksheet.
  8. The Run process policy item will now blink, allowing you to give it a meaningful name so you can identify it easily in the policy evaluation flow.
